Should You Keep a Flashlight in Your Car?

When you think of an essential or emergency tool that you should have, the first thing that comes to mind is a flashlight. Smart people always keep one in their home, garage, or in any place they think they might need one. But what about the car? Should you keep a flashlight in your car?

We at STRK Concepts believe that you should always keep a flashlight in your car. You never know when you might need one. There can be many instances when you might need a trusty flashlight waiting to assist you in your car, like changing your tire in the middle of the road at night.

We have provided reasons why you should stow a flashlight inside your car here in this article. We’ve also talked about a few of our flashlights that you can consider buying and explained what makes them so great.

Why You Should Keep a Flashlight in Your Vehicle

It is always a good idea to keep a flashlight in your vehicle. It can come in handy in practical and especially in emergency situations where this item can save lives. Here are some of the reasons for you to consider carrying a premium quality flashlight in your car, all the time:

  • Finding Something in Dark

When you drop something in your car, it is quite a hassle to find it for the darkness between the car seats. And if your car’s interior lights have burnt out, the whole car turns into a black hole.

In that case, you stumble around in the dark to find what you are looking for. But you are touching anything and everything without knowing what it is. If you touch something that is dangerous, it can cause you bodily harm. Just having a flashlight in your car will make things a lot easier, and safer too.

  • Changing A Tire

Changing a flat tire in the dark is a grueling task. But there are some extraordinary human beings who can do this almost impossible job with ease.

However, whether you are one of them or not, if you drop even one of the lug nuts, you will find yourself cursing, while you are looking for it on the side of the road. Just having a flashlight can remove that unnecessary anguish.

  • Jump-Starting Your Car

Your car batteries can go bad without any prior indication. This is known to all who own a vehicle. In that case, jump-starting can bring your car back to life. It requires you to connect the jumper wires correctly between car batteries.

But things can go wrong if you try to jump-start another car in the dark. If the jumper wires are not connected to the right terminal, this can fry your car’s onboard electronic components. So, attempting to jumpstart a car in the dark is not a good idea without a great flashlight.

  • Alerting Traffic and Cleaning up After a Minor Accident

In the event of a car breakdown or accident, it is always recommended to throw some flares on the road. This is to alert the traffic about the accident. But not everyone keeps flares in their vehicle and there is a potential that they will stop producing light before help arrives at the spot. Flashlights can be a great substitute for these flares.

In the case of a minor accident, it is a good idea to remove broken glasses and other debris from the road that can cause accidents. A flashlight can help you find them in the dark. And at the same time, you can use it to alert other fellow drivers that you are on the road so that they don’t run you over.

  • You Ran Out of Gas

If you run out of gas in the middle of a road or suddenly your car loses all of its power, you have to have a light source to tackle the issue. A flashlight can really come in handy in such situations.

  • Self Defense

A flashlight can be used for brute force as a last resort. You can use a sturdy flashlight as a melee tool to strike the attacker. This can give you a split-second chance to run away.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Flashlight

It is always a good idea to keep a flashlight nearby at all times. Before you buy a flashlight, there are a few things you need to consider. They are:

Lumens

A Lumen is a measurement of the brightness of a light source. The higher the value of lumens in a flashlight, the brighter the light will be.

Usually, the flashlight that we have on our smartphones can produce anywhere between 20 to 100 lumens of light. This is enough just to brighten the surrounding of your immediate vicinity. But they won’t be able to penetrate very far into the pitch-black veil of the night.

For a good flashlight that will work for an extended period, our recommendation is that you go for one that can produce between 200 to 1000 lumens.

To learn more about lumens, check out our lumens-specific article here.

Battery Type

Different flashlights use different types of batteries. Some use AAA batteries, some use rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries. AAA batteries are cheap and easily replaceable when they are completely drained out.

On the other hand, you can recharge Lithium-ion batteries once they are out of juice. This makes them more environmentally friendly.  You can also charge them in your car via USB outlets or  your lighter outlet.  Just be sure to keep one charged.  A rechargeable flashlight is great, unless it isn’t charged.

Weather Resistance

It is always a good idea to buy a weather-resistant flashlight because you do not know in what situation you are going to be using it. For flashlights that you intend to keep in your vehicle or use for outdoor camping lighting, always go for water-resistant and shock-resistant ones.

Modes and Controls

In the past, flashlights used to have only an on and off switch. But now you can get flashlights with multiple controls and lighting modes. You can select different lumen output of the flashlight depending on what you are using it for.

Some flashlights even come with strobe light settings. This can come in handy when you are trying to alert traffic after an accident on the road or in case of emergency situations. This lighting setting is also great for self-defense as it will blind the attacker, thus giving you a chance to escape.
